Question:

Is 2 Samuel 7:16 a failed prophecy? “And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’””  ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭7‬:‭16‬ ‭ESV‬‬..I saw a critic claims that this is a failed prophecy, because “houses” and kingdoms do not last forever.

Answer:

This is in fact a prophecy, as well as a promise of God to David.  This passage of Scripture is known as the Davidic covenant.  It is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the “Son of David.”  He is the direct descendant of David, having been born in Bethlehem, the City of David.  He is descended from David, both through his mother (Matthew 1), and through his father (Luke 2).  This prophecy has not failed.  Jesus died, true, but he was raised from the dead on the third day, and he later ascended back to heaven, where he sits at the right hand of God, reigning as a king forever.  This prophecy/promise has surely been fulfilled by God in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.
