How can you be sure that the decree to restore Jerusalem (Ezra 7) was issued in 458 BC? (and therefore Daniel prophesies the date of Jesus' death)
Question:
I am referring to one of the powerpoint presentations at the web site (Reflections on the Passion of Christ). It indicates that the decree of Artaxerxes (Ezra Chapter 7) was issued around 458 BC. I am impressed with the overall insight into the prophecy (Daniel Chp 9). However, how did you reach the conclusion that it fell on that particular year (458 bc)? Is it validated by some history document ? Thanks !
Answer:
There is a good reason we can be so precise about the date of the decree of Artaxerxes. In Ezra 6:7 we are told that Ezra went to the king in the seventh year of his reign. The actual decree to rebuild the city and the wall is found in Ezra 7. Artaxerxes ruled Persia from 465-424 BC. Therefore, the 7th year of his reign is 458 BC. The dates of the rule of Artaxerxes are validated by many historians, including Herodotus and Thucydides. More details about this prophecy and the historical context can be found in by book Daniel, Prophet to the Nations at www.ipibooks.com
I hope this helps.
