Question:

How would you respond to people who say “The Romans never conducted censuses in client kingdoms”?

Answer:

I am assuming this is in response to the fact that Luke tells us a census was taken, which was the reason Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem.  I would say that this is incontrovertibly a false statement.  We have a record of regular censuses in Egypt, which was a client kingdom.  The census of 14 AD yielded a population of 4.5 million.  Censuses in Egypt were done every 5 years.  This is a matter of record. This statement is coming from a person who is simply mistaken.  Here is an article about a census which happened in Judea in 6 AD.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census_of_Quirinius   That these censuses happened is common knowledge among historians.  This critic ought to do better research and stop making false statements, in my opinion.
