These are the scriptures that testify about me. Jn 6:39,40 I am the fulfillment of the
I. Historical prefigures. 2 Pet 2:4-8 God teaching us 1 Cor 10:11 Romans 15:4
a. Brazen serpent Jn 3:13-15
b. Adam and Eve prefigure our general relationship with God.
c. The flood = judgment and baptism 1 Peter 3:20-22
d. The flood points to the 2nd coming of Jesus 2 Pet 3:3-7
e. Ishmael/Hagar/Abraham/Sarah Gal 4:21-27. (Gen 21:10, get rid of that slave
woman and her son, for that slave woman?s son will never share in the inheritance
with my son Isaac). Take your son, your only son?
f. Sodomand Gomorrah= judgment 2 Pet 2:6. Also a foreshadow of grace (Lot).
f. Jacob and Esau chosen by God or not (Romans 9:10-13, Heb 12:16) It is
not just coincidence that the second son got the blessing.
g. In Egypt= in sin (Heb 3:16, Jude 5)
h. Leaving Egypt, going through Red Sea= baptism=saved from sin (1 Cor 10:2)
i. wandering in the wilderness = leading life of a disciple, learning to trust
in God. Heb 3:7-11, Deut 8:1-5 dying while in the wilderness = became disciple
but fell away due to unbelief.
j. entering promised land = heaven (Deut 11:12, Deut 12:8,9,11, Heb 3:12-4:
2, Gen 15:18)
k. Sent as a captive to Babylon= captive to sin (Rev 14:8, 17:5 18:10, 21)
II. Pre-figures of Christ.
a. Joseph (went down to Egypt, saved God?s people, despised and rejected by

c. Jonah (sent by God to save Nineveh, Matt12:39-41, Luke 11:29-32)

k. Samuel: prophet (1 Sam 3:20), priest (1 Sam 3:1), and king/judge/governor
(1 Sam 7:6,15-17). Samuel saved Israelboth spiritually (1 Sam 7:2-4) and militarily (1
Sam 7:10,11,13,14). Samuel a miraculous birth.

blue, purple and scarlet yarn = heavens, royalty, blood.
b. Holy of Holies = heaven, presence of/relationship with God Heb 9:11,12,2

d. golden altar of incense = prayer (Rev 5:8)
e. bronze sacrificial altar = the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins. Hebrews 9:11-14
f. lampstand = the churches Rev 1:20
oil in the lamp = the Holy Spirit (Zech 4:, Heb 1:9, Ps 23)
oil of anointing = HS 1 Sam 16:13, 1 Sam 10:1,9,10
g. show-bread = spiritual food = Word of God John 6:35 Ex 25:23-29.
h. for that matter, the manna in the ark = Jesus Jn 6:35
i. the ark, mercy-seat = the presence of God
j. the tabernacle or temple itself = the church 1 Cor 3:16= God tabernacling with
his people Rev 21:3, John 1:14.
k. outer courtyard = gentile, lost person, holy place = Jews, Holy of Holies
l. the curtain = separation from God Matt 27:51 Hebrews 10:20.
IV The Levitical Priesthood prefigures the New Covenant priesthood.
The priesthood. The priesthood is a shadow of things to come (Hebrews 9:6-8)
A. Aaronic priesthood = us Heb 9:14 We serve God 1 Pet 2:5 you are a spiritual
priesthood 1 Peter 2:10 We are a royal priesthood.
1. Priestly regulations prefigure our ministry as priests of God.
2. Priests are devoted to the ministry (2 Chronicles 31:4) as we are
devoted to the
ministry (Luke 14:35).
3. Priests are set apart and holy, as we are. 1 Corinthians 1:2
4. Therefore we are priestly ministers to the lost Romans 15:16, 2 Corinthians
B. High priest = Jesus Christ Heb 4:14-5:3, Heb 7:26-8:6
1. High priest regulations prefigure the ministry of Christ. Leviticus
2. High priest?s garments prefigure the work of Christ. Exodus
a. Urim and Thummim = 12 apostles and 12 pillars on heaven Re

V The Law of Moses and the Law of Christ.
Ceremonial Law = Law of Christ.
Heb 7:12. When there is a change in priesthood, there must be a change in law.
Heb 8:7-13. Problems with the first covenant.
Coll 2:17 These things (new moon etc.) are only a shadow of the things that
were to come. The reality, however, is found in Christ.
The legal system. The Law in general led us to Christ (Romans 7:7-12)
The first covenant had regulations for worship which were a shadow of things
to come (Hebrews 9 in general) Heb 9:10
a. Law of Moses compared to Law of Christ. Romans 8:1,2. The law is only a shadow
of the good things that are coming–not the realities themselves (Heb 10:1-3)
b. The pouring out of blood in general = blood of Christ (Hebrews 9:12-14, 20-22
c. Sabbath = Sabbath-rest Heb 3:16-4:11 Lev 23:3
d. tithing Lev 27:30-33 We need to give.
e. Sabbath years and jubilee years Lev 25 our need to take time to be with God
and to trust God to take care of our needs.
f. Laws, rules and regulations vs principles based on heart and relationship.
g. Physical blessings (Deut 30:15,16) vs spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3-5)
h. Ceremonial cleanness/uncleanness vs in sin /not in sin
i. Slavery to laws vs freedom in Christ.
VI The Sacrifices are a pre-figure of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The sacrificial
system. Each of the OT sacrifices pre-figures something we have in Christ.
a. burnt offering olah Lev 1 Eph 5:2 Romans 12:1,2, Phil 1:20,21, Eph 4:15 Head not cleaned
but body cleaned = Jesus and the church. Total commitment, dedication.
b. grain offering minchah First fruits of our life. Us: Lev 2 Rom 15:16, 2 Cor 8:5, Phil 4:
18, Heb 13:15, 1 Pet 2:5 Christ: James 1:18, 2 Cor 2:15. Oil (anointing), incense
(prayer) and salt (eternal life).
c. drink-offering nesek Lev 23:13 Being irretrievably poured out. 2 Tim 4:6 Phil 2:17 co
mmitment, our suffering
d. fellowship, free-will or peace offering zevach shelamim Lev 3, Rom 12, 1,2.
Thank-offering Lev 7:11-15, Vow or free-will offering Lev 22:23.
e. sin-offering = Christ chatat Lev 4. For violations against God. Heb 10:4 Heb 9:13 (blood of
bulls and goats: Leviticus 16) Not for initial forgiveness, but for someone already
?saved.?. No provision for intentional sin. (Hebrews 10:26-31)
f. trespass offering asham. Lev 5:14-6:7. For violations against a brother.
VII The festivals Lev 23:15-44. Coll 2:16,17 Our need to celebrate our relationship
1-day feasts = celebrating a specific event in the Christian life.
7-day feasts = celebrating an aspect of the Christian life.
a. Passover = Last Supper, Death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus our Passover
lamb Exodus 11, Ex 12:12,13,46, Numbers 9:121 Pet 1:18,19, 1 Cor 5:7. Therefor
e let us keep the Festival. Last Supper = Last Seder. Luke 22:7,8,14-16 Rev 12:11, Rev 5:5,6. The blood of
a lamb was spread on a beam of wood, just as the blood of THE lamb was spread
on a beam of wood. Unleavened bread = Jesus is sinless.
b. Feast of Firstfruits = The Resurrection of Christ (Easter?) Lev 23:9-14 1 Cor 15:20-23

c. Feast of Unleavened Bread = Celebrating a life free of sin. Exodus 12:17-19.
d. Feast of Weeks/Feast of Pentecost (shavoat) = Beginning of the harvest of
souls, Beginning of the Church. Giving of the Holy Spirit. Leviticus 23:15-17.
e. Feast of Trumpets (rosh hoshannah) = Return of Jesus and Judgement day. Leviticus 23:24,25,
Matthew 24:30,31, 1 Corinthians 15:51-53.
f. Yom Kippur = The day you were saved from your sin. Leviticus 23:27-36. atoning sacrifice
1 Peter 2:24 scape-goat = continual cleansing. Note in 1 Pet 2:24, he is bearing,
not forgiving, as did the goat. Gal 3:13redeemed, becoming a curse for us (Deut 21:2
3) the scape-goat. 1 Pet 2:24. Jesus became our scape goat. Note parallel between this and Leviticus
g. Feast of Booths/Tabernacles/Ingathering = Celebrating fellowship with God. God dwelling with us. Levit
