To what race did Mary and Joseph belong?

The concept of “race” did not really exist in the ancient world. As far
as I know, the Jews did not have words for different races. The Bible
certainly does not hint at the race of Mary of Joseph. I believe we can
assume that they were Semitic, as the Jews were Semitic. The word Semitic
refers to a family of languages rather than to a race, but this might give
us a hint to the ethnic background. This would be more or less the same
as the modern day Arab or Palestinian. One thing we can be sure of is
that the pictures in most Medieval art of a white Jesus with light brown
hair are not accurate.
