Question:

My question is on this passage:  “For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.”  ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭8:5-6‬ ‭NASB‬‬     Is this saying that there are indeed many gods ( like what the Hindus or perhaps Mormons  believe )  but that we, as christians : who are privileged with the bible-  should only focus on capital “g”, God who wants our sole attention?  Maybe I’m not understanding the cultural or linguistic context  but It seems to imply that  these polytheistic people, who don’t have the Bible , have a truth of their own and it is indeed true.

Answer:

Here Paul is using rhetoric.   He is using the words of others sarcastically as a means to make an argument.  Anyone who says that Paul believes that there are many real gods has a big problem with dozens of dozens of passages which prove this to be a lie (I do not mean to imply that you believe this, of course).  He said in 1 Tim 2:5 “There is one God, and one mediator between man and God.”  In fact, I say start at any passage in the New Testament and simply start reading.  I bet you will find a reference to there being only one God withing just five minutes.   This refrain runs throughout the Bible.

What Paul is doing here is something like this:  Imagine I told you that I was just in Bali last month (actually I was).  I told you that there are many many Gods in Bali.  How would you interpret this statement?  Would you use this to prove that I believe there are in reality many real, actual gods?  Of course not.  Accusing Paul of believing in or teaching the existence of many real gods would be to do something like that.

The answer is NO!!!  The Bible does NOT say that there are many actual gods, but that we should only worship one of those gods, the one called Jehovah.  This utterly a false interpretation of scripture.
