Question:

Jeremiah Ch. 33:17-18 foretold false things which have not happened, because there is no temple that exists and no king lineage runs on. What’s your response?

Answer:

The person making this statement (I assume it is not you and that you are finding this at a Muslim anti-Christian website) does not know what they are talking about and does not understand the Old Testament.  That is my opinion.  There are a number of passages about the Son of David and Jesus, the Son David fulfills them all.  These include 2 Samuel 7:16, in which it is prophesied that David’s throne will last forever.  Jesus serves forever on the throne of David.  He is the king of kings.  It also includes Jeremiah 33:15-18. As this passage says, Jesus is the Branch from David’s line.  He is the one who, even now, sits on David’s throne.   Jesus is the Son of David, as prophesied in many biblical passages. He is the root/branch of Jesse, as prophesied in Isaiah 11:1.  Jesus was born in Bethlehem as the Son of David, and as prophesied in Micah 5:2.  Jesus is the righteous branch and the righteous king of Jeremiah 23:5.  Jeremiah 33:17-18 does not even mention the temple, but Jesus is the high priest of the New Covenant.  Jesus always serves in the real tabernacle—the one in heaven.  This is proved by Hebrews chapters 7 & 8 which describes Jesus as the perfect high priest in the order of Melchizedek.  Also, Hebrews 4:14-5:10 explains why Jesus is the perfect, eternal high priest which is prophesied in Jeremiah 33:17-18.
So, whoever says this does not understand the nature of Old Testament prophecy or the fact that Jesus fulfills all of these prophecies.  He is the King of Kings, he sits on David’s throne forever and he is the perfect high priest who sits at the right hand of the Father in the real, heavenly tabernacle.  If you want to do some more research, I talk about these things in my books From Shadow to Reality and Hebrews: Living by Faith, both available at www.ipibooks.com.
